Mahama Releases GH¢100m for Ghana National Research Fund

June 16, 2026

Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama has approved the release of GH¢100 million to support the operational launch of the Ghana National Research Fund (GNRF), a major initiative aimed at strengthening research, innovation, and knowledge development in the country.

The announcement was made during the official launch of the Fund, where the President described the allocation as a catalytic investment intended to establish a sustainable national research financing framework.

Driving Research and Innovation

The Ghana National Research Fund, established under the Ghana National Research Fund Act, 2020 (Act 1056), is designed to provide sustainable funding for research and technological advancement across key sectors of the economy.

The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between academic research and practical application by ensuring that innovations developed within universities and research institutions are translated into solutions that support national development.

Strategic Areas of Support

The initial GH¢100 million allocation will support several key areas, including:

  • Competitive national research grants
  • Doctoral and postdoctoral research programmes
  • Development of digital grant management systems
  • Strategic innovation initiatives
  • Priority research projects aligned with national development goals

These interventions are expected to strengthen Ghana’s research ecosystem and enhance the country’s capacity to generate home-grown solutions to development challenges.

Strengthening Economic Competitiveness

President Mahama emphasised that increased investment in research is essential for economic competitiveness and national resilience, noting that countries that rely heavily on imported technologies remain vulnerable.

He indicated that Ghana must work towards significantly increasing its investment in research and development to align with global and continental targets.

Call for Effective Implementation

The President directed relevant government institutions, including the Ministries of Finance, Education, and Environment, Science and Technology, to collaborate in ensuring the effective implementation of the Fund’s financing framework.

He further stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in the management of the allocated resources to ensure maximum impact.

Outlook

The operationalisation of the Ghana National Research Fund is expected to play a pivotal role in advancing scientific research, innovation, and industrial development, while supporting Ghana’s broader agenda of building a knowledge-based economy.

The initiative is also anticipated to enhance collaboration between academia, industry, and government, contributing to sustainable national development.
