Mahama Extends Sympathy to Families Affected by Flooding

July 1, 2026

Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama has extended his condolences and sympathies to families affected by the recent flooding that followed heavy rainfall in parts of the country. He described the situation as deeply distressing and assured affected communities of government support as recovery efforts continue.

Speaking during a sod-cutting ceremony for the Tema Integrated Industrial Park (TIIP), the President noted that the flooding had caused widespread disruption, resulting in injuries, property damage, and the displacement of residents in several communities.

Sympathy for Affected Families

President Mahama expressed concern about reports of missing persons and conveyed his sympathies to families whose relatives remain unaccounted for, as well as those who have suffered losses as a result of the disaster.

He acknowledged the emotional and economic impact of the flooding on households and communities, particularly individuals whose homes, businesses, and livelihoods have been affected.

Extreme Rainfall Blamed for Flooding

According to the President, the flooding was triggered by exceptionally heavy rainfall that recorded approximately 140 millimetres within a 24-hour period in parts of southern Ghana. He indicated that such volumes of rainfall placed enormous pressure on existing drainage infrastructure and contributed to widespread flooding.

The downpour affected several areas, including parts of Accra and other coastal communities, causing extensive damage and disrupting normal economic and social activities.

Government Support and Recovery Efforts

President Mahama assured residents that government remains committed to supporting affected communities and working with emergency response agencies to address the aftermath of the disaster.

He emphasised the importance of ongoing search, rescue, and recovery operations and assured the public that efforts would continue to assist victims and facilitate rehabilitation in the affected areas.

Need for Resilience and Preparedness

The President’s remarks highlight the growing importance of disaster preparedness, climate resilience, and effective drainage infrastructure in mitigating the impact of extreme weather events.

As recovery efforts continue, authorities are expected to work closely with communities and relevant stakeholders to restore normalcy and strengthen measures aimed at reducing future flood risks.

Outlook

The recent flooding serves as a reminder of the significant challenges posed by extreme weather events and the need for coordinated efforts to protect lives, property, and livelihoods.

Government’s commitment to supporting victims and strengthening disaster management measures is expected to play a key role in helping affected communities recover and build greater resilience.
